The Humanities in the World initiative demonstrates Penn State’s commitment to the importance of humanities research and the dissemination of ideas regarding our collective understanding of urgent social issues. As such, each semester the Humanities Institute will host scholars and events under the rubric of our Faculty Invites program.
The purpose of the Faculty Invites program is to support conferences, workshops, and/or lectures led by faculty members in humanities disciplines to take place at University Park. Approved proposals will be considered Humanities Institute events. Specialized research topics with focused appeal are welcome, but special consideration will be given to events with broader disciplinary appeal and especially to those that involve interdepartmental collaboration. HI staff will support these events either in part or as a whole, by working with the faculty hosts and their home departments to arrange organizational details (such as some if not all travel/lodging, venue, and catering arrangements), and creating and disseminating publicity materials.
Faculty members interested in a conference proposal are required to meet with HI Director John Christman and Associate Director Lauren Kooistra in order to determine fit and funding possibilities prior to application. Please email humanities@psu.edu to arrange for an appointment. Only conference applications that have received prior consultation will be considered. Those interested in a lecture or workshop proposal are not required to meet, but are welcome to schedule an appointment if desired.
There are two rounds of application deadlines. (Support for proposals submitted in Spring 2024 will be dependent on the extent of resources remaining following the Fall 2023 deadline.)

Proposals should be emailed to humanities@psu.edu with subject line Faculty Invites, by 5:00 p.m. on the application deadline date.
