The Iberian Modernist Studies Forum

Nicolás Fernández-Medina and Krista Brune

Nicolás Fernández-Medina, Associate Professor of Spanish and Philosophy
Krista Brune, Assistant Professor of Portuguese and Spanish

The Iberian Modernist Studies Forum draws together faculty and students from Penn State and around the globe interested in cross- and multidisciplinary dialogue on the aesthetic, socio-historical, and philosophical transformations that fundamentally shaped Iberian culture throughout the modernist period. In collaboration with the Humanities Institute, the forum will spearhead the Comparative Iberian Modernisms Colloquia, which will examine a series of modernist texts in translation from Iberia’s diverse cultures and consider them within the broader framework of global modernisms. Over the span of six meetings throughout the 2020-21 academic year, we will bring into conversation two pioneering figures in Spanish/Basque and Portuguese modernisms: Miguel de Unamuno and Fernando Pessoa. In each meeting, participants will benefit not only from the contributions of invited speakers and guests, but also from collaborations with other departments and units. For more information on the Iberian Modernist Studies Forum or the Comparative Iberian Modernisms Colloquia, please contact Nicolás Fernández-Medina (nuf3@psu.edu) or Krista Brune (kub290@psu.edu).
